1977 SKILLED HANDS FOR INDEPENDENCE #1720a Plate Block of 12 x 13 cents US Postage Stamps

Description

On July 4, 1977 in Cincinnati, OH. The USPS issued this se-tenant depicting early American civilians whose skills were essential to the winning of the Revolutionary War. As in all wars, extensive logistical support was needed to back up combat forces. The stamp designer Leonard Everett Fisher saluted four representative sources of support -- the seamstress sewed uniforms and flags, the blacksmith shod the horses and constructed metal fittings for the cannons, the wheelwright made transportation possible, and the leather worker fashioned the saddles, boots, and holsters. Issuance of the block of four stamps on July continued the Postal Service practice begun in 1971 of marking the Nation's birthday each year with a new commemorative stamp.
