On October 7 1982 in San Francisco CA, the USPS honored St. Francis of Assisi, the man who renounced material goods and family ties and embraced a life of poverty. St. Francis is remembered for his love of nature and all creatures on Earth. He founded the Franciscan Order in 1209. He is known as the patron saint of animals, the environment and Italy, and it is customary for Catholic churches to hold ceremonies honoring animals around his feast day of 4 October. St Francis died on October 3, 1226.
