Construction

Six long hollowed and sealed glass tubes of the same size.

The air pressure inside is 40, 10, 3, l, 0.1, 0.02 mm high mercury respectively.

Each glass tube is equipped with an electrode at each end,

a round piece-shaped electrode as the cathode and a round rod-shaped electrode as the anode.

Round rod-shaped electrode for the anode.

All discharges are temporarily placed side by side firmly in a semi-dark box, (preferably with the anode at the lower end).

40: Light purple linear light pattern appears.

10: The purplish-red band of light widens and fills almost the entire tube.

A glow of another colour appears around the cathode.

3: The cathode area has a clear blue glow, the anode area has a slight scaly glow.
