The current Maple leaf flag was inaugurated on Feb 15 1965 by HM Queen Elizabeth 11 It is designed so that the obverse and reverse sides appear identical. The Maple leaf has been used as a Canadian national symbol since the 18th Century, when It appeared on the coat of arms of the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. In 1921 King George V proclaimed red and white as the official colors of Canada.
