About this item: Known as toc toc for the sound that they make, these percussion instruments are essential to any Peruvian musical ensemble. Their origin can be traced as far back as pre-Hispanic times. Dionisio Quilla carves the instrument from pumaquiro wood in the shape of two hollow cylinders for double toc toc. One side is longer than the other, resulting in contrasting beats when struck with a stick. The single toc toc features a low relief surface to enrich the sound. The playing sticks are carved from capirona wood. - Each artwork is unique -- wood grain, color, and pattern will differ slightly from picture About our Artist: When he was eight years old, Dioniso Quilla began to learn his craft from his father, and started making instruments just for fun. He handcrafts most traditional Peruvian musical instruments, including percussion such as bombo and tinya drums, stringed instruments such as charango guitars, and wind instruments the quena panpipe and zampoa flute. Quilla uses wood and bamboo and colorful cotton threads to give each instrument a Cuzco flair.
